4 Tips for Summertime Eye Health

Summer is officially here, which means sun – and lots of it. There’s a reason why Florida is called the sunshine state. Residents of West Palm Beach, Wellington and Greenacres get their fair share of sun during the summer months.

And while most of us have gotten into the habit of protecting our skin by liberally lathering on high SPF sunscreen, one thing we often forget about protecting is our eyes. Keeping your eyes protected during the hot season is extremely important because harmful UV rays can lead to a number of vision conditions, including macular degeneration, eyelid skin cancers and the development of cataracts.

The good news is, just like sunscreen protects the skin, there are also ways to easily protect your eyes. Follow these tips to ensure proper eye care during the hottest months of the year.

  1. Wear sunglasses – Wearing sunglasses is one of the simplest ways to protect your eyes from UV rays. Whether you prefer designer glasses or designer frames, the important thing to pay attention to when shopping for sunglasses is the amount of UVA and UVB rays the lenses block. Simply buying dark lenses doesn’t necessarily mean that they will block harmful rays. Read the labels to ensure you are buying a UVA and UVB-blocking product. When in doubt, check with your eye doctor.

  2. Wear a hat– Wearing a hat along with your sunglasses adds a double layer of protection for your eyes. Oftentimes, even the best UV blocking sunglasses can’t keep out all of the light, depending on the angle of the sun. Wearing a sunhat, baseball cap or visor helps to block sunlight that could otherwise be filtered through the top of the sunglasses.
  3. Wear goggles – Summer is often synonymous with time spent in the water. Whether you prefer to cool off in the ocean or a pool be sure to wear a mask or goggles. Salt water in the ocean and chemicals in the pool can agitate eyes leading to irritation. Wearing goggles will not only protect your eyes from chemicals, they will also help protect against UV rays.
  4. Eat Eye-Healthy Foods– This summer, be sure to take advantage of fresh produce at your local market. Filling your plate with leafy greens and carrots is not only healthy for your body; it’s also great for eye health. Eating foods rich in vitamins and minerals have been shown to also improve vision.
