Cleaning and Care for Transition Lenses

Transition lenses are lenses that darken in the sunlight and appear normal indoors. They are ideal for people who are sensitive to light. They also appeal to people who want the luxury of having prescription sunglasses without buying an extra pair of glasses.

Transition lenses rarely have any problems. They last as long as a regular pair of eyeglasses with the proper care. They can also be plastic or glass, depending on your preference. However, they are more expensive than traditional corrective lenses.

Benefits of Transition Lenses

Transition lenses are convenient. You can use them whether you are indoors or outdoors. They also offer UV protection, so you do not need to keep carrying your sunglasses. They save money as you do not need to buy a pair of sunglasses in addition to your prescription lenses.

Taking Care of Transition Lenses

There are five basic steps to taking care of your transition lenses. If you follow these steps, you will keep your eyeglasses in top condition. You can also follow these steps to clean your sunglasses and sports eyewear.

Step One: Wash and Dry Your Hands

You will need to wash your hands thoroughly before you clean your eyeglasses. This will rid your hands of any residue that may scratch your lenses or make them sticky. Use liquid soap that does not contain a moisturizer, and dry with a clean, lint-free towel.

Step Two: Rinse Your Glasses

Rinse your glasses under a tap with a gentle stream of water. Doing this will help remove debris and dust without scratching the lenses. Use lukewarm or room temperature water; hot water will damage your lens coating.

Step Three: Apply Liquid Soap and Clean

Before applying the liquid soap to the lenses, make sure it does not have a moisturizer in it. Apply only a tiny amount of the soap on the lenses. Alternatively, you can put one or two drops on your fingertips. You can then use your fingertips to apply the soap to the lenses.

Apply soap to every part of your glasses, including the temples and nose pads. Clean the edges of the frames and the hinges where debris, dust, and skin oil accumulate.

Step Four: Rinse the Eyeglasses

Remove all traces of soap from your frames and lenses. If you leave some traces, they will cause smears when the eyeglasses dry. Remember to rinse with lukewarm or room temperature water.

Step Five: Dry Your Eyeglasses

First, inspect your lenses to make sure they are clean. Afterward, gently shake your eyeglasses to get rid of most of the water. Then dry them properly with a clean, lint-free cloth. If there are streaks or smudges, use a clean microfiber cloth to remove them.

Things to Note

You will need to clean your transition lenses at least once a day. It will help remove smudges, dust, and dirt particles that accumulate during the day. Dry-wiping can result in micro-scratches that may spoil your lenses with time. Use only soap and water to clean your lenses; do not use other chemicals. These may react with the special coating on your lenses and spoil them.

When you are not using your eyeglasses, store them in their case. Do not place them on the table or counter. When there is no other alternative, do not place them on a surface face down. You may end up scratching the lenses. Place them upside down with the temples open.
