Ocular Disease Management & Monitoring
Just like the rest of your body, your eyes go through changes as you age. From cataracts and glaucoma to diabetic retinopathy and macular degeneration, your risk for certain eye diseases increases over time, even if your vision still feels “normal.” We are skilled in diagnosing and managing a wide range of medical eye conditions to protect your sight and long-term vision health.
Conditions Planet Vision Eyecare Manages
Our medically trained optometrists, Dr. Hetel Bhakta and Dr. Tuyet-Suong Pham, provide eye care for patients managing chronic and age-related vision conditions. Many of these diseases can progress quietly over time, often without noticeable symptoms until damage has already occurred.
If you’ve already been diagnosed, need ongoing care, or simply want a comprehensive eye health check, our team is here to support you.
Age-Related Macular Degeneration
AMD is a common condition that affects the central part of your vision, making it harder to read, drive, or recognize faces. It typically develops in adults over 50 and can progress slowly.
We screen for dry and wet AMD using advanced retinal imaging. If early signs are detected, we’ll help you monitor your condition and recommend nutritional support, lifestyle changes, or referral to a retinal specialist if needed.
Cataract Co-Management
Cataracts are a natural part of aging, but when they start to interfere with your life, it’s time to talk about next steps. Cataracts cause the eye’s lens to become cloudy, often resulting in blurred vision, glare sensitivity, and faded colors.
Our team provides thorough cataract evaluations and will help you understand when surgery is needed. If you choose to proceed, we’ll refer you to a local ophthalmologist and stay involved in your pre-surgical measurements and your post-op care.
Diabetic Retinopathy
Diabetes doesn’t just affect your blood sugar; it can have a serious impact on your eyes. Diabetic retinopathy occurs when high blood sugar levels damage the tiny blood vessels in the retina, which can lead to vision loss if not caught early.
Planet Vision Eyecare provides diabetic eye exams to detect early changes before symptoms appear. Using retinal imaging and dilated exams, we monitor for bleeding, swelling, or new blood vessel growth in the retina. If we detect signs of damage, we coordinate with your primary care physician or endocrinologist and refer you to a retinal specialist if necessary.
Glaucoma Management
Glaucoma is often called the “silent thief of sight” because it typically develops without symptoms, and once vision is lost, it can’t be restored. The condition causes damage to the optic nerve, often due to increased eye pressure, and can lead to permanent peripheral vision loss if not treated early.
We screen for glaucoma during every comprehensive exam and offer ongoing management for patients with a confirmed diagnosis. This may include visual field testing, optic nerve imaging, and prescription eye drops to lower pressure. If advanced treatment is needed, we’ll coordinate care with a glaucoma specialist.
Technology for Early Detection & Ongoing Monitoring
At Planet Vision Eyecare, we use advanced diagnostic technology to detect disease early and to monitor changes over time.
Optomap® Retinal Imaging
This non-invasive, ultra-widefield scan enables us to view over 80% of your retina in one image, often without the need for dilation.
Visual Field Testing
Used primarily for glaucoma and neurological evaluations, visual field testing maps your peripheral vision to detect blind spots or patterns of vision loss.
OCT (Optical Coherence Tomography)
OCT provides high-resolution, cross-sectional images of the retina and optic nerve, which are essential for diagnosing and managing glaucoma, AMD, and diabetic macular edema.
Electroretinography (ERG)
For patients with more complex conditions or unexplained changes in vision, we use ERG to assess the function of retinal cells. This is helpful in monitoring advanced diabetic retinopathy, AMD, and retinal conditions.
