What Are Scleral Lenses?

Scleral lenses are large-diameter, gas-permeable contact lenses designed to vault over the entire cornea and rest on the white part of the eye, called the sclera. Unlike standard lenses, they create a smooth, optically clear surface over irregular or damaged corneas.

The space between the lens and your eye holds a fluid reservoir, which hydrates and protects the cornea throughout the day. This makes scleral lenses especially effective for patients with keratoconus, corneal scarring, post-surgical eyes, or severe dry eye.

They are custom-designed for each individual eye, offering exceptional clarity, long-term comfort, and life-changing results.

Conditions That Can Benefit from Scleral Lenses

Scleral lenses are more than a specialty contact lens; they’re a therapeutic solution for patients whose vision or comfort can’t be corrected with glasses or standard contacts. We've successfully fit scleral lenses for a wide range of complex conditions, including:

  • Keratoconus
  • Irregular or misshapen corneas
  • Post-LASIK or RK surgery complications
  • Corneal scarring or trauma
  • Severe dry eye (including Sjögren’s syndrome)
  • High or unstable prescriptions
  • Pellucid marginal degeneration
  • Corneal transplants (PKP/DALK)
  • Post-corneal crosslinking (CXL)

If you've been told you're "not a contact lens candidate" or your current lenses just aren't working, contact us for a consultation.

Scleral Lens Fittings at
Planet Vision Eyecare

Fitting scleral lenses is never one-size-fits-all, and that’s exactly where we stand apart. Dr. Hetel Bhakta is nationally known for her expertise in managing complex corneal conditions, and patients travel from across the region to be evaluated by what many refer to as the “scleral lens wizard.” Our scleral lens designs are powered by the most advanced fitting technology available:

Eaglet ESP (Eye Surface Profiler)

A high-resolution, 3D profiler that captures over 350,000 data points to map the entire ocular surface, including the sclera. This allows us to fit lenses that truly align with your eye's shape.

OVITZ xWave Aberrometer

This wavefront-guided technology measures higher-order aberrations (HOAs)—tiny distortions in vision that standard lenses can’t correct. With this data, we design lenses that improve image quality, contrast, and night clarity.

EyePrintPRO® Prosthetics

For the most complex or irregular eyes, we offer EyePrintPRO®, a custom prosthetic lens molded from a direct impression of your eye’s surface (similar to a dental mold). This provides micron-level accuracy for cases where traditional mapping falls short.

Very few practices offer EyePrintPRO®, and even fewer have the hands-on experience to fit it successfully. Dr. Bhakta has helped patients from across the U.S. and abroad find life-changing clarity and comfort through this highly specialized lens system.
