Prepare your Child for a New School Year

Your kids may be out of school for the summer, but before you know it, it will be time to start checking off their school supply lists and outfitting them in new back to school clothes.

To ensure your child is ready for another year of learning, it’s always a good idea to schedule an appointment with an eye doctor to assess any potential eye care needs your child may have.

Many children experience eye problems that go unnoticed for months, and sometimes even years, because they don’t realize they aren’t seeing normally. This can mean they don’t perform as well in school as they should, or they fall behind.

Summer break is a great time to observe your kids in case there are any signs that they might be in need of glasses or contact lenses.

Here are some of the most common signs that your child may need glasses or contacts:

Squinting– One telltale sign that your child may be having a hard time seeing is if they start squinting when looking at faraway objects. When your kids look at something far away, do they squint to try to help them make out a particular object? If so, it might be time for a trip to the eye doctor.

Sitting too Close – Often children who are in need of glasses or contacts sit too close to the television because they are unable to make out the images from farther away. They may be using iPads/other tablets or iPhones and if you notice them holding these very close, it may be due to an underlying vision problem.

Genetics – When a parent is in need of corrective contact lenses or glasses, their child is also at higher risk of having eye issues or needing glasses. Poor vision is genetic, if you or your spouse needed glasses at an early age, it may be that your child does as well.

Missing Certain Objects – When you point things out for your child to look at, do they often miss what you are pointing out? Sometimes a parent might blame their child’s short attention span for missing things, when really they may have an issue with their vision.

If you live in Greenacres, West Palm Beach or Wellington, be sure to give Dr. Bhakta at Planet Vision Eyecare a call to schedule your child’s eye care exam before the start of the school year.
