Does Dry Eye Worsen in Certain Seasons?

Dry eye is a condition that occurs when the eyes do not produce adequate tears or the tears they produce evaporate too fast. Several factors can cause dry eye and the condition can worsen due to environmental, weather, and seasonal changes.

Environments can trigger dry eye syndrome and moving to a new location can make dry eye symptoms increase.

Dry eye occurs if tears evaporate too fast because it fails to lubricate the eye surface. Changes in the environment can affect the process of evaporation. Dry or warm air can cause moisture on the eye surface to evaporate faster than humid or cool air. People who live in hot and dry climate areas are more likely to suffer from dry eye all year round. This is unlike those who live in wet or tropical areas.

Cold weather can trigger dry eye symptoms as well. The outdoor humidity tends to drop in winter, causing dry eye. The use of heating systems in the home or office increases with the cold weather. This causes the indoor environment to be dry and warm, triggering dry eye too. It helps to use a humidifier to add moisture to the indoor air.

Heat and humidity during the summer months can rob the eyes of essential moisture. Without adequate lubrication, the eyes will end up dry and painful. Using an AC to dispel some of the heat makes things worse and contributes to the drying effects.  

Dry Eye During Fall

The air is cold and dry during the fall, and this can cause dry eye symptoms. The fall season can also lead to an increase in allergens such as mold and ragweed pollen. An increase in autumn outdoor activities also exacerbates the dry eye condition.

Dry Eye During Winter

Dry eye can be common in winter due to harsh, cold winds and dry indoor air. The variations in temperature between the indoor and outdoor air can lead to rapid evaporation of moisture in the eyes.
